Strand is a seaside town situated on the eastern edge of False Bay and at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains. Its geographical position is just between Macassar and Gordon's Bay, about 5 km southeast of Cape Town. Its main attraction is five kilometers of white sandy beach and most houses and apartments are located close to this. During the summer, tourists from inland - mainly Johannesburg - flock to the area to take advantage of some of the best and safest swimming in the country. Water sports are conducted from various points along the beach and include sailing, power-boating, paddle skiing and board sailing. The Pipe is a part of the beach marked off for surfers and is known for its big, "surfable" waves. Recent expansion in the area has included the development of shopping malls and residential complexes, many with views across the bay to Table Mountain and Cape Point. The suburb offers easy access to Cape Town International Airport and there is a train service to the Cape Town CBD.
