The town - still considered a village by many of its residents - comprises three parts: the 'old village' situated around the old harbour, Bikini Beach and the main beach; the 'mountainside which lies on the lower slopes of the Hottentots-Holland Mountains; and 'Flat Gordon's Bay' which is the most recently developed part. The older part of Gordon's Bay is home to the South African Naval College, an officer training center located adjacent to the old harbour and yacht marina. The Steenbras Dam, Cape Town's primary supply of drinking water, is located on the mountain above the town.

Strand is a seaside town situated on the eastern edge of False Bay and at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains. Its geographical position is just between Macassar and Gordon's Bay, about 5 km southeast of Cape Town. Its main attraction is five kilometers of white sandy beach and most houses and apartments are located close to this.
